A 19-year-old male fast-food worker from Santa Paula is in critical condition after a shooting in Oxnard, according to authorities.
On Aug. 28 at about 8:26 p.m., Oxnard Police Department officers and emergency services personnel responded to calls of a shooting at restaurant chain Five Guys Burgers in the 2700 block of Portico Way, according to a department news release.
Officers found a male restaurant employee, who has been shot once, and he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, police said. No others were shot.
The employee was on his break inside the restaurant at the time of the incident, the release says.
Investigators found the victim was not the intended target of the shooting but that "a round was fired during an altercation"
outside the restaurant between an Oxnard male, 16, who is suspected of being the shooter, and two other males, officials said.
Motive for the altercation and shooting is unknown, the release says.
Officers obtained and served a search warrant at the 16-year-old's home in the 500 block of East First Street, police said. Investigators, SWAT officers and K9 unit officers contacted and arrested the 16-year-old as he left his home.
The 16-year-old was booked into a Ventura County juvenile facility for suspected attempted murder, officials said.
