A 64-year-old man was killed early Sept. 28 after being struck by a Jeep on Victoria Avenue in Oxnard.
Oxnard police responded around 2 a.m. to reports of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Victoria Avenue near Gum Tree Street, according to a department news release.
When officers arrived, they found the man suffering from significant injuries in the southbound traffic lanes about 300 feet south of the Santa Clara River Bridge.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his name has not been released.
The driver of the Jeep Wrangler stopped in the southbound center median just south of the man and cooperated with officers, according to the release.
A preliminary investigation found the Jeep was traveling south on Victoria when the driver
saw the man crossing the southbound lanes.
The driver immediately stopped after hitting the man.
A minute before the crash, police said they received a call of a person in the roadway near the same location. Police believe the call may have involved the man.
Police do not believe speed or the use of alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The release also does not indicate that any other vehicles were involved.
The crash remains under investigation.
The crash closed the southbound lanes of Victoria Avenue between Olivas Park Drive and Gonzales Road.
A traffic advisory was issued at 2:03 a.m., and the lanes remained closed as of 9:30 a.m. No estimated reopening time was available.
Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.
