A crash outside Oxnard in which a man was found dead prompted an investigation by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office on Sept. 1.
The California Highway Patrol initially received a crash notification from the driver's smartphone around 2:47 a.m., said sheriff's Capt. Kevin Kipp.
CHP officers found a vehicle had collided into a guardrail on Hueneme Road near Olds Road, and the driver inside suffered from a gunshot wound to the head, Kipp said. A handgun was also found inside the vehicle, he added.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The CHP's Ventura-area office contacted the sheriff's office to investigate the incident, the captain said.
Sheriff's investigators arrived and identified the driver as a 22-year-old from Oxnard. His death was being
investigated as a suicide, Kipp said.
The Oxnard Police Department responded to assist with traffic control as the incident shut down Hueneme Road from Arnold Road to Rice Avenue for hours, said police Cmdr. Thomas Rawlings.
