Six people, including the suspected shooter, are dead and another was in critical condition after a shooting incident that spanned three locations in Missaukee County in nothern Michigan, according to
a release from Michigan State Police.
According to a preliminary timeline released by MSP, troopers from the Seventh District were dispatched to a residence on South Lachance Road in Missaukee County around 11:40 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14, following a report that a person had been shot. Police found three dead people at the residence and a fourth who was in critcal condition and taken to an area hospital. A suspect was identified and a large-scale search was initiated by MSP. As part of the search, a fourth body was found at a separate residence.
Police found the suspect's vehicle near Whitlock Lake in Caldwell Township. In a nearby wooded area, police discovered two additional deceased people, including the suspect.
Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Chad Hickman. Information on the victims such as age and gender are not being released at this time, pending notification to next of kin, MSP said.
“This situation is heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved,” MSP Lt. Ashley Miller said in the release. “We remain committed to conducting a thorough investigation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.”
Miller told UpNorthLive.com that there is no threat to the public at this time.
In addition to Michigan State Police units, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Forest Service, Missaukee County Sheriff’s Office and the Missaukee County Road Commission assisted in the search and investigation.
