Michigan’s largest health care system has reached a tentative first contract with a union for about 10,000 registered nurses.
The news, announced on Tuesday, July 28, comes after about a year of bargaining between Corewell Health East and the nurses represented by Teamsters Local 2024. The nurses voted to unionize in late 2024, then voted to authorize a strike earlier in 2026.
The union members will now vote on whether to approve the contract, as noted in a statement from Mark Geary, senior director of communications for the health system. It’s “an important milestone,” however.
“We remain committed to being a great place for nurses to work, and to providing the best, high-quality care to the patients and communities we serve,” he said.
The Teamsters
first announced the tentative agreement in a social media post Tuesday evening, calling the deal “historic.” The union also shared details of the three-year agreement, including:
- A 15% wage increase over the life of the contract.
- Caps on the average out-of-pocket health care premiums.
- A committee to allow nurses to address issues directly with management.
The agreement also includes protections that would force the health care system to bargain before making changes to paid time off, bereavement, jury duty and more, according to the post.
The vote to approve the contract will take place in the coming weeks, the union stated.
The nurses work at Corewell locations in Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Southfield, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Trenton, Troy, Taylor and Wayne.
