If you're an avid coffee lover or someone who loves a deal, set an alarm for Tuesday, Sept. 29.
It’s the day to celebrate and enjoy America’s favorite beverage other than water — and often morning pick-me-up — the humble cup of coffee.
But you can skip turning on the coffee pot if you like and grab a free or discounted cup of joe or other beverages at metro Detroit retailers.
That’s because each Sept. 29 is deemed National Coffee Day. The day was first celebrated in 2005, according to the National Day Archives. But celebration as a holiday came four years later in 2009, when the Southern Food and Beverage Museum in New Orleans deemed the day “Coffee Day," kicking off the inaugural New Orleans Coffee Festival, according to its website.
And on Oct.
1, coffee is celebrated globally on International Coffee Day.
Around metro Detroit, coffee shops, fast-food places, convenience stores and others are marking Sept. 29 with freebies, discounts or deals.
And those deals and discounts couldn’t come at a better time, as coffee prices are on the rise for Americans, who consume on average nearly three cups of coffee per day.
According to the most recent Consumer Price Index report, overall coffee prices are up 6% and instant coffee is up a whopping 11% from the same time last year.
You can also celebrate coffee in Dearborn. The city with a booming coffee scene is celebrating its third annual Coffee Week now through Oct. 2.
Events include the DRIP Coffee Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, at Peace Park West. The event celebrates Dearborn’s coffee culture with three DJs, handcrafted coffee and other local flavor. Bakri Coffee Roasters takes over the coffee bar.
The weeklong coffee and culture event ends Friday, Oct. 2 with a gathering from 6-8 p.m. at Peace Park East, 13621 Michigan Ave. Several of the events require advance registration and tickets. For information, go to dearborn.gov.
Throughout the week, coffee shops and other establishments will have pop-up events celebrating coffee.
Around metro Detroit and beyond, retailers are brewing up some not-to-miss National Coffee Day deals.
Keep in mind some offers require you to have the retailer's app or join a loyalty program.
Biggby Coffee
On Sept. 29, Biggby’s 16-ounce brew is 99 cents. Biggby’s 16-ounce Mocha Mocha Latte is $1.99 for the day.
Circle K
Free medium hot or iced coffee at all locations nationwide. The offer is redeemable through the Circle K app and its innercircle rewards.
Dunkin’
Dunkin’ offers a free medium hot or iced coffee with any purchase through the Dunkin’ app on Sept. 29. Also on National Coffee Day, the first-ever L.L. Bean and Dunkin' collaboration drops with a Dunkin’-inspired Birdseye Sweater, a Boat and Tote plus a limited-edition L.L. Bean Coffee Tote.
Einstein Bros. Bagels
Get a free any-size and any flavor hot or iced coffee with any purchase on Sept. 29. The offer includes the limited-time Creme Brulee. According to its website, a new item is Einstein’s pull apart bagel and shmear for $3.
Krispy Kreme
Guests can get a free small or medium hot or iced coffee on Sept. 29 with any purchase.
Also, in time for National Coffee Day, Krispy Kreme shops are celebrating with a new flavor. Its new Original Glazed Coffee flavored doughnut is available for a limited time. From Sept. 26-29, get a dozen of the new flavor for $5 when you buy any dozen at regular price.
Paris Baguette
PB Rewards members get a free medium hot or iced brewed coffee with purchase Saturday to Monday. Paris Baguette has locations in Birmingham, Dearborn, Novi and Portage.
Parlor Doughnuts
Guests receive $5 off any order of $25 or more. The offer is valid in-store or online with promo code SAVE5. There’s one redemption per person. Parlor Doughnuts has locations in Lake Orion, Sterling Heights and Bay City.
Pilot and Flying J
Pilot, Flying J and One9 offer a free, any size hot coffee all day on National Coffee Day. Redeem the free coffee through the myRewards Plus app at participating locations. Pilot's coffee fall flavors are now available, including Bourbon Pecan, Pumpkin Spice Cappuccino, Vista Brazilian and Birthday Cake cold brew. There’s also Pumpkin Pie Spice creamer, a limited time creamer at Pilot’s self-serve coffee bars.
7 Brew
With any drink purchase at 7 Brew locations, customers can get a free collectible state license plate sticker.
7-Eleven
A large coffee is $1.49 at participating 7-Eleven, Speedway and Stripes stores. The offer is available to 7Rewards and Speedy Rewards loyalty members. Rewards members can also get 7-Select mini doughnuts for $1.
Sheetz
Any size self-serve hot or iced coffee, including its XL size, is free on Tuesday through Thursday, Sept. 29-Oct. 1. Sheetz is a gas station chain with made-to-order food and beverages. In Michigan, Sheetz now has more than six locations. To get the offer, you must be enrolled in the chain’s My Sheetz Rewardz loyalty program.
Tim Hortons
Guests get a free, any size, hot or iced coffee with no purchase necessary. Vanilla, vanilla almond, mocha or caramel flavor additions are included. You must activate the offer in the Tim Hortons app.
