A man is in police custody after threatening visitors on Drummond Island, and attacking the captains' quarters of the ferry between DeTour Village and the island with a hammer on Thursday, Oct. 15, according to Chippewa County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Justin Fruchey.
No one on the ferry crew was injured during the incident that occurred at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
The man, whose name and age were not released by the sheriff's office, was placed under arrest for destruction of property and attempted assault, among other things, Fruchey said.
The incident began on Drummond Island where the man threatened people on the island.
Officials then noticed him on the ferry, operated by the Eastern Upper Peninsula Transportation Authority (EUPTA),
and isolated him on the boat by lifting the ramps.
Once he was away from the island, he struck the door of the cabin at least three times, Fruchey said, before being arrested once the ferry arrived at the mainland.
Where is Drummond Island?
Just east of De Tour Village and across a much-traveled shipping channel, Michigan's Drummond Island occupies 134 square miles in northern Lake Huron.
To get to Drummond Island, visitors must take the Drummond Island Ferry from De Tour Village.
