Henry Ford Health will close its emergency department and end inpatient services at its River District Hospital in East China Township in St. Clair County.
The emergency department will close on Sept. 1, the Detroit-based health system said in a statement on its website. It will remain open and fully staffed until the end of the month.
Primary care practices, infusion services and some administrative services on the River District campus will remain open, according to an emailed statement from the health system. Patients will continue to have access to labs, pharmacy and imaging services through nearby Henry Ford locations, the statement said.
"The building itself currently requires substantial infrastructure repairs and modernization to continue
operating, and investing in the building is not a sustainable long-term solution for providing the safe, high-quality care our patients deserve," the statement said.
Henry Ford Health said it is committed to supporting everyone through this transition, including helping patients identify care options at nearby Henry Ford Health locations and connecting any impacted team members with opportunities across the health system. About 60 people work at the hospital, Lauren Zakalik, a Henry Ford Health spokesperson, said in an email.
Patients will receive information and resources in the coming weeks to help ensure a smooth transition, the statement said.
The emergency department closest to the River District Hospital that's part of the Henry Ford Health system is Henry Ford Medical Center — New Baltimore, about 18 miles away.
Henry Ford Health is one of Michigan’s largest health systems with more than 50,000 employees across 13 hospitals.
