Decision day has arrived for Jalen Duren.
The Detroit Pistons have been in a months-long standoff with their franchise center, who has been threatening the possibility of accepting the one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer in order to be an unrestricted free agent in the 2027 offseason.
The deadline for that is today, Thursday, Oct. 1, but unless the Pistons agree to a sign-and-trade (which they've indicated they have no interest in doing), Duren will be on the Pistons no matter what he decides.
And it's not a simple choice for Duren.
Taking the qualifying offer is a potentially multi-million dollar risk, as the Pistons are reportedly offering Duren a contract extension
worth $200 million over five years, more than any team could've offered him in restricted free agency.
The problem for Duren seems to be how the negotiations have played out, with some hard bargaining and a reported "weight clause" in the deal that has seemingly been taken out of the contract offer, according to The Athletic.
It's been a long saga, with trade rumors and many debates about who should cave first (even NBA legend Carmelo Anthony chimed in on the matter).

Langdon: '[Duren] will be a Detroit Piston'
08:14 AM ET, October 1 2026, Christian RomoAt media day on Monday, Sept. 28, Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon said he was looking forward to having Duren back regardless of the center's upcoming decision.
"Regardless of what his decision is, what we can control is the way that we welcome him in when he makes that decision," Langdon said. "He is going to be a huge part of the team regardless of what decision he does make. He will be a Detroit Piston and we’ll do everything we can to support him and get the best version of him, which is what we’ve done the past two years, and that will not change. Those are things that we can control. The decision is not one we can control."
