Is it legal to bring campaign literature into a polling place? No.
Michigan election law says a person can't post, display or distribute campaign materials within 100 feet of the entrance to a polling location during an election. It's important information for every voter to know as the Aug. 4 primary election approaches. Things that are off-limits include:
- Wearing clothes or accessories that refer to a candidate or ballot proposition.
- Bringing signs that refer to a candidate or ballot proposition.
- Requesting signatures for petitions.
Voters are allowed to bring voting guides into the booth.
Law enforcement or an election official may have you leave the polling place if you break the rules. The legal punishment for breaking them is a misdemeanor, which could mean a fine up to $500 or up to 90 days in jail.
