The Detroit Red Wings claimed defenseman Andreas Englund off waivers, adding to their organizational depth.
The transaction on Saturday, Sept. 26 came hours before the Wings' final exhibition game, and two days before the 5 p.m. deadline to trim rosters to 23 players.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Englund, 30, appeared in three games (no points) last season with the Nashville Predators and has 200 career NHL games (20 points, minus-26 rating) on his resume, with a journeyman's list of stops also including the Ottawa Senators, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings.
He's stood out in his career for his scrappiness, picking up 190 penalty minutes, including 24 fights, most notably 11 during the 2023-24 season.

Englund, originally the 40th overall selection by the Senators in the 2014 draft, was signed in the offseason by the Calgary Flames to a one-year, two-way contract for $900,000. The Flames placed him on waivers Friday.
The Wings entered Saturday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Little Caesars Arena with eight defensemen on their roster, plus Simon Edvinsson, who is unsigned: Moritz Seider, Ben Chiarot, Justin Faulk, Albert Johansson, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Jacob Bernard-Docker, Anton Johansson and William Wallinder. Edvinsson has been practicing with the team but remains in need of a new contract.
