A gas station clerk inadvertently helped an Oakland County man win a $1 million lottery prize, according to the Michigan Lottery.
The 62 year old, who chose to remain anonymous, was buying scratch-off tickets at the Speedway gas station at 1010 S. Rochester Road in Rochester when the clerk asked him a question.
"I picked out several different scratch-off tickets while I was at the store, and as the clerk was grabbing them off the rolls, she asked if I wanted a Ruby 7s ticket too, so I said, 'Why not?'" he told the Michigan Lottery.
He scratched the ticket in his car and was shocked to discover he had won a $1 million prize.
"My daughter was with me, so I showed her the ticket, and she nearly hit her head on the roof of the car from jumping up with excitement!"
The winner recently claimed his prize and chose to receive a one-time lump-sum payment of about $693,000 rather than annuity payments for the full amount.
"This prize is going to give me some leeway financially," he said. "It will allow me to start college funds for my kids, buy a house, and then I’ll have some fun with the rest."
The Ruby 7s game costs $10 to play. The game launched with three $1 million top prizes. Two of those prizes remain unclaimed.
