Ford is one of the most American companies and its flagship is the Mustang. But its halo car is the Ford GT. The original Ford GT40 is a legendary race car, updated in 2005 and in 2017. A 2021 Ford GT with a liquid carbon fiber exterior is up for auction Oct. 16 by Richmond Auctions. The auction is a part of the Inaugural Fall Spectacular at Savoy Automobile Museum in Cartersville, Georgia, where 125 cars and 400 pieces of automotive memorabilia will be sold. The bidding for this 1 of 30 supercar is already over $1 million.
One of Ford's most prestigious cars
The Ford GT40 was first created to compete with Ferrari in Le Mans in 1966. Even though the car had extremely high expectations they were exceeded as the GT40 finished first, second and third in the race.
The road-going variant
of the GT40 was then sold to private buyers starting in 1966. The original used a naturally aspirated V8 while the 2005 version was powered by a supercharged 5.4-liter V8. The latest era of GTs are now powered by a twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 that left potential buyers and Ford fanatics raising their eyebrows at first but those who have driven the new GT have high praise for the new powertrain.
1 of 30
While Ford built only 1,350 Ford GTs for 2017 and 2019, this GT up for auction is one of the rarest of them all. It has a liquid carbon fiber exterior and is one of 30 to be built by Ford. Just to get a regular Ford GT was difficult enough, but buyers of the liquid carbon edition were handpicked by Ford to get the chance to buy one.
Most of the 2nd generation Ford GTs were built with carbon fiber all over the place but it’s covered up by the paint. The Liquid Carbon edition covers carbon fiber with a clear coat that leaves the weave fully exposed. The optional $30,000 Light Speed Interior Package blends blue Alcantara and black leather to pair well with the carbon-fiber-shell Sparco seats. The 20-inch wheels are also made with exposed carbon fiber.
How much will it sell for?
While most 2nd generation Ford GT’s started at around $500,000, the Liquid Carbon edition started at $750,000 before options. The bidding stands at over $1 million and the price will only go up. Last year another liquid carbon Ford GT sold at auction for $1.8 million by Barrett-Jackson and this car can be expected to reach above $2 million.
