Michigan Sen. Jeremy Moss, D-Southfield, won the Aug. 4 Democratic primary for Michigan's 11th Congressional District, according to CNN and NBC.
As of 9:36 p.m., Moss had 49.2% of the vote in a four-way contest that also included attorney Aisha Farooqi, Waterford School District trustee John Paul Torres and retired engineer Don Ufford.
Moss will face Troy Mayor Ethan Baker in the general election in November. Baker ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
In November, Moss will be heavily favored. Two political handicapping sites, Cook Political Report and Inside Elections, both rate the 11th District as a solidly Democratic seat. The district is based almost entirely in Oakland County.
U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Birmingham, vacated the seat to
run for U.S. Senate. In 2024, she won reelection by nearly 19 percentage points — a notable margin for the district's partisan makeup, given Republican President Donald Trump carried the state that year.
Moss has been a state senator since 2019, having served two terms in the Michigan House prior to that. From 2011 to 2015, he was on Southfield's city council.
In the Senate, he chairs the Elections and Ethics Committee as well as the Regulatory Affairs Committee. He is also President Pro Tempore, meaning he leads Senate sessions when Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II is not in attendance.
If elected, he would be Michigan's first openly gay member of Congress.
Baker was first elected to Troy City Council in 2015 and has been mayor since 2019. Outside of his work with the city, Baker is an attorney specializing in estate planning, business law and real estate, according to his city bio.
Baker is also an elected Republican precinct delegate and was a special assistant to former President Ronald Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan after they left the White House in 1990.
