The severity of the injury that caused Detroit Tigers left fielder Riley Greene to leave the series-opener against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, Aug. 11 was up in the air in the immediate aftermath.
Greene, a three-time All-Star in left field, got pulled from the game between the second and the third innings after he reported right hamstring tightness
to the Tigers' training staff. Greene reached base in the second inning after getting hit by a pitch in the lower right leg.Even though it hit his leg pad, it looked painful, but Greene remained in the game and took first base. A few pitches later, Greene raced from first to home on an RBI double from Spencer Torkelson into the left-center field gap. Greene looked like he was running at his normal
speed, but had to exit the game after that.
Following the game, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said the team will have more information on the severity of Greene's injury on Wednesday. Regardless of how he feels, Hinch will give him an off day and take the injury day by day.
"Anytime you take a guy like Riley out, there is a level of concern," Hinch said. "But I have no idea. I think we are going to get up tomorrow, we will get him tested and we'll see. Everybody, with this hamstring stuff, or soft tissue lower extremity stuff, will tell you that the next day is really the big key."
Greene has been an iron man for the Tigers (59-60). The three-time All-Star corner outfielder had appeared in 117 of the Tigers' 119 games so far this season, either in left field or as a designated hitter. Greene is hitting .273 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs on the season.
