Two northbound lanes of Mound Road at 18 Mile Road inSterling Heights are closed because an estimated 100 gallons of crude oil surfaced near the area from a leak on a 16-inch pipeline, according to city and Macomb Countyofficials.
Cleanup and remediation efforts are underway, a city release said, as is identifying and repairing the source of the leak.
The right two northbound lanes of Mound at 18 Mile are closed until further notice because of the oil spill on the roadway, according to an advisory from the county road department.
The city said the pipeline carries crude oil through the city and the leak is affecting parts of a parking lot and Mound Road. It said there is no danger to residents or homes in the area.
The city said the pipeline operator,
who was not identified, shut down pressure to the line. Some residual pressure remains, resulting in oil continuing to surface, according to the release.
Crews responded to contain the release and to prevent oil from entering city and county storm drains, the city said.
