A mother and her two young daughters were hospitalized after they were struck by a train in Ecorse on Sunday evening, Oct. 4, police said.
The 32-year-old woman and girls, ages 10 and 4, were struck at about 6:30 p.m. near Salliotte and Fifth streets, the Ecorse Police Department said in a release.
All three are Ecorse residents.
Police said early information indicates the family was attempting to cross the railroad tracks near a stopped train when they were struck by another passing train.
The mother and children were treated at the scene before they were taken to the hospital, police said.
No information was provided about the extent of injuries.
In the release, police said the information is preliminary “and should not be considered a final determination
of how the incident occurred.”
Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been factors, they said.
Chief of Police Derran Shelby warned about the dangers of railroad tracks.
“Our thoughts are with this family and everyone affected by this incident,” Shelby said. “I urge everyone to exercise extreme caution around railroad tracks. A stopped train can block your view of another approaching train, and railroad equipment can move unexpectedly. Never climb over, crawl under, or pass between railroad cars.”
