Three days after a man went overboard a yacht anchored near the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, authorities recovered a body in Lake St. Clair near Grosse Point Farms, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities declined to say if they believe the body was that of the missing man as they await an autopsy from the medical examiner's office.
The discovery comes one day after search crews stopped looking for for the 74-year-old Canadian man who police say slipped off a yacht on Lake St. Clair on Saturday evening, Sept. 5.
According to Kevin Tolbert, the chief of staff for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, a tip was called into the Sheriff's Office from someone in Grosse Pointe Farms on Tuesday morning, Sept. 8. Authorities responded to that
tip and went to the location along Lake Shore Drive, just north of Pier Park in Grosse Pointe Farms, where they discovered a body.
The man has been missing since around 7 p.m. on Saturday when a woman called 911 for help, according to the sheriff's office. The man and woman were aboard a 58-foot-long yacht and tried to pull the anchor to go to dinner, when the man slipped and fell off the bow.
"It was windy and choppy. He somehow slipped off the bow and went into the water," Sgt. Michael Roehrig, who runs the Wayne County marine division and dive team, said over the weekend. He said the woman saw the man alongside the boat.
"He was swimming and she tried to get a life preserver to him but couldn't find it. He was trying to explain to her where it was at. She was looking around. She came back and that's when he went under. He got separated from the boat," Roehrig said, noting the woman did not know how to maneuver what he described as "a big yacht ... a million-dollar boat."
