More than 250,000 DTE Energy and Consumers Energy customers were without power early Friday, Sept. 4, after storms rolled through the region Thursday, Sept. 3.
DTE reported 243,434 customers without power shortly before 8 a.m. Friday, while Consumers Energy reported 16,416 affected customers.
At a Friday morning news conference, a DTE spokesperson said the utility had restored power to 75,000 customers overnight and hoped to restore service to 65% of affected customers by the end of Friday, 90% by the end of Saturday and all customers by the end of Sunday.
DTE said it was monitoring weather systems expected to move through the area Friday and was prepared for additional storms. Showers and thunderstorms were expected in the morning and afternoon
with isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms possible, according to the National Weather Service.
About 2,400 DTE storm response workers were restoring power when the outages began Thursday, and that number was expected to grow to more than 4,000 by the end of Friday, according to the utility.
DTE said it was seeing widespread damage in the Howell and Brighton areas. There was also evidence of a possible tornado on Detroit's east side near Mount Elliott and Vernor, and crews were continuing to assess the damage.
"We appreciate everyone's patience as we work around the clock to safely and efficiently restore power," the spokesperson said.
