The Detroit Free Press Marathon is putting out a call, not for runners, but for more volunteers.
More than 4,000 volunteers are needed for this year's marathon weekend, but less than 60% of those positions have been filled so far.
"Volunteers are an essential part of race weekend and help provide a positive experience for thousands of runners," according to organizers of the Detroit Free Press Marathon
.The 49th race weekend, Oct. 16-18, features several events, but organizers say volunteer demand is highest on Sunday, Oct. 18, when the sold-out marathon and half-marathon races are held.
What marathon volunteers will do
No experience is required. According to the Detroit Free Press Marathon, volunteers can assist with:
- Relay exchanges: Help manage exchange areas and assist runners as they hand off to teammates.
- Relay reunion: Welcome relay participants after their races, assist with food and fluids and help keep the reunion area organized.
- Start/finish line: Help manage runner flow and support runners at the beginning and end of the race. At the finish line, volunteers welcome participants with heat sheets, medals and nutrition.
- Gear check: Collect, organize and return runners’ gear before and after the race.
- Course monitors: Help keep the course safe and organized, monitor runners and spectators and report any issues to race staff.

Groups, schools and individuals encouraged to sign up
The 2025 marathon drew about 26,000 registrants across race weekend, setting an attendance record. About 30,000 registrants are expected for the 2026 race.
Volunteers are also needed throughout the weekend, including at the Kia Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, Oct. 16, and for Saturday's 1-mile race, 5K, Kids Marathon and Little Detroit Dash.
Organizers say volunteering offers an opportunity for sports teams, school groups and community organizations to earn service hours. Individuals, groups, clubs and schools are encouraged to sign up. All volunteers will receive a jacket.
Volunteers must register through the Detroit Free Press Marathon website by Oct. 5.
