Michigan State Police are investigating an after a trooper shot a man after a car chase in northern Michigan on Saturday, Aug 22.
Police say the suspect, a 29-year-old Gaylord man, fled a traffic stop by the MSP. The vehicle was later located by a deputy from the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office, who initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit ended when the suspect struck an MSP patrol car and then a tree on Sparr near Wilkinson Road in Otsego County's Dover Township.
The suspect was shot after the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, the MSP said.
The release did not make clear whether deputies or troopers shot the man, or how the man presented a threat to officers. The release also did not provide information on the initial stop.
The incident began
at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday, when troopers from the Gaylord Post conducted a traffic stop on South Otsego Avenue (Business Interstate 75) near Seventh Street in Gaylord.
The Michigan State Police (MSP) Seventh District Special Investigations Section (SIS) is investigating the shooting. The MSP Bridgeport Crime Lab responded to process the scene.
