Romulus football has cancelled its Week 7 homecoming game against Dearborn Heights Annapolis on Friday, Oct. 9, because the school district received "credible information that there is a coordinated intention to incite violence at tonight's game," according to an announcement from superintendent Benjamin Edmondson.
Edmonson said that students reported the threat to officials, allowing them "to inform the appropriate authorities in a timely manner."
"It is my responsibility as the superintendent to ensure the safety of our community and act with certainty particularly when receiving any threat of violence at our events," Edmonson said in the statement.
The district
did not indicate if the game against Annapolis would be made up on a different date. Romulus currently sits at 3-3 and in the middle of the pack in the Western Wayne Athletic Conference.
The district said it will be "transparent" and reveal more about the situation as they receive information. In the statement, Edmonson also urged parents to speak with their kids about reporting potentially concerning behavior.
"Today, we are able to avert a catastrophic event, but it takes just one moment of poor decision-making or failing to report a known threat that can permanently change the lives of one or many. Violence, of any sort, is not a manner in which to settle disputes and differences," Edmonson said in the statement.
