Freep Opinion welcomes commentary, analysis and first-person essays about politics and civic life in Michigan from diverse perspectives, as both guest columns and letters to the editor.
Opinion submissions should be fact-based. Guest columns that primarily serve promotional or public relations purposes are unlikely to be published.
Artificial intelligence
Readers come to Freep Opinion for human ideas and authorship. We do not accept submissions generated by artificial intelligence. We may ask anyone submitting guest columns or letters to attest to this policy, and affirm human authorship. We may use an AI detection tool to confirm human authorship.
What we're looking for
Check Freep Opinion for examples of the work we've published. You'll find guest columns tied to current events, politics,
elections, democracy, education, housing, business and other issues affecting Detroit, metro Detroit and Michigan communities.
Successful guest columns:
- Advance a clear argument or idea.
- Help readers understand an important issue.
- Offer first-hand expertise.
You can submit an op-ed using this form.
Letters to the editor
Some readers prefer to submit letters to the editor instead. Letters are shorter than guest columns and may contain a focused reaction to current events, or a news story or column that's been published in the Free Press.
You can submit a letter to the editor at freep.com/letters, or use the form at the end of this file.
Submission guidelines
Submit columns and letters using the form below. Submissions may be edited for accuracy, clarity, style and length. They will be assessed, in part, based on adherence to the following guidelines:
- The ideal length for guest columns is 600 to 800 words.
- Letters should be fewer than 350 words, but in some cases, we'll consider a longer letter.
- Include links supporting factual claims, quotes and statistics.
- For guest columns, include a brief author biography of no more than two sentences and a current headshot you have permission to share.
- To be eligible for publication, submissions must meet the Free Press' standards for fairness and accuracy.
- Disclose relevant financial, professional, political or organizational ties related to the topic.
Responses and reviews
We receive more submissions than we can publish and, unfortunately, are unable to respond individually to every piece. A member of our editorial team may contact you if we need additional information or would like to discuss publication.
By submitting a column or letter, the author grants the Free Press the rights to publish, distribute, archive and use the work in print, electronic, online or other format.
