Americans will soon get a chance to buy gold coins with President Donald Trump's image even as recent polling suggests he's as unpopular as he's ever been.
The U.S. Mint will begin selling $1 "gold" coins
featuring Trump's official White House portrait at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 2, USA TODAY reported, making Trump the first living person in more than a century to appear American currency or coinage.While described as “gold coins,” the $1 tokens don’t contain any precious metals. Rather, the Treasury said they have a “gold-like finish.”
Americans, however, gave Trump poor ratings across several recent polls, reaching as high as a 60% disapproval rating in an Aug. 28-31 Economist/YouGov survey. Americans gave Trump a 56% disapproval rating in a Sept.
2 Rasmussen Reports poll and in Michigan, a Sept. 1 Civiqs poll reported a 57% disapproval rating for Trump.
Real Clear Politics, which aggregates data from numerous polls, shows Trump's current average approval rating is 17.5 percentage points below his average disapproval rating — an improvement from early August.

Is Trump going to appear on currency?
The U.S. Mint is set to begin selling a $1 "gold" coin with Trump's likeness at noon Wednesday, Sept. 2, USA TODAY reported. Featuring Trump’s official White House portrait, the coins were designed to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary.
Collectors can purchase 100 coins for $154.50 or a roll of 25 for $61. Dispersed among the bags and rolls are 250,000 coins pressed on the Fourth of July, with a “July 4” privy mark, the Treasury said in a news release.
While described as “gold coins,”the $1 tokens don’t contain any precious metals. Rather, the Treasury said they have a “gold-like finish.”

- The survey of 2,200 registered U.S. voters was conducted the week ending on June 22, 2026, and has a margin of error of ±2 percentage points.
How did the Civiqs poll rank Trump?
Civiqs:
- Nationwide, 59% disapprove of Trump's job performance, while 35% approve
- In Michigan, 57% disapprove of Trump's job performance, while 37% approve
