Detroit police have announced a $5,000 reward for information that may help solve the Oct. 13 fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl, who was gunned down while sitting in a Jeep on the city's east side.
According to the police, the victim was sitting in a Jeep Grand Cherokee with three others in the 4700 block of Chalmers when a dark-colored sedan drove by at around 6:53 p.m. and someone inside fired shots out a window. Two victims were struck by the gunfire: the 16-year-old who died, and a 19-year-old, who suffered non fatal injuries.
"It's just tragic ... just senseless," a visibly frustrated Chief Todd Bettison said during a nighttime press conference at the scene of the crime, with Mayor Mary Sheffield standing next to him. "I'm very angry about
this, and so are my officers."
He added: "We're sick of the violence. We're tired. Enough is enough."
Sheffield expressed similar frustration.
"My heart breaks for the families and loved ones of this young girl," Sheffield said. "No family should have to endure the devastation and pain that this brings."
Bettison vowed more police patrol in the neighborhood where this occurred, and stressed that when those responsible for this crime get caught: "We will throw the book at them."
The incident happened near the intersection of Chalmers and E. Forest.
