A foul odor led to the discovery of two bodies − and subsequently skeletal remains − on Detroit's west side this August.
Detroit police conducted a well-being check on Thursday, Aug. 20, after a neighbor reported a foul odor at a home in the 10500 block of Stoepel Street, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison revealed in a news conference on Monday, Aug. 24.
Officers found a 14-year-old boy and his 50-year-old mother dead in an apparent murder-suicide.
The next day, police interviewed family members and learned the woman's husband hadn't been seen or heard from in years, the chief said.
Police returned to the house and found skeletal remains in the basement.
All three individuals
are believed to have died from gunshot wounds.
Bettison called on the public to check on their loved ones, citing other violence from the weekend as well.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested for the shooting of two women on the city's east side during the weekend. One of the women died. In addition, a 10-year-old boy was among four injured in a mass shooting that also took place on the city's east side on Friday, Aug. 21.
