Here we go again.
Almost two weeks after their last less-than-friendly face-to-face meeting at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, the candidates for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat — Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed and Republican nominee Mike Rogers — will meet for their second and final scheduled debate tonight, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at the WXYZ-TV Detroit studios.
It will be livestreamed here on freep.com and broadcast live on WXYZ-TV Channel 7 in the Detroit market and WXMI Fox 17 in Grand Rapids. It also will be streamed live on https://www.wxyz.com and https://www.fox17online.com. The Free Press also will keep a running live blog of comments and context to help readers and watchers navigate the back-and-forth.
On Oct. 8, El-Sayed, the former Wayne County
and Detroit health director from Ann Arbor, and Rogers, a former U.S. House member from White Lake, went at each other for an hour on WOOD-TV, talking over each other, bickering and hurling personal insults. Each is vying to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Gary Peters with partisan control of the Senate potentially on the line.
El-Sayed has had asmall lead over Rogers in the polling averages in the race and both have powerful allies coming into Michigan in the days to come: former President Barack Obama is expected in Detroit on Saturday, Oct. 24, to campaign for El-Sayed and other Democrats; and President Donald Trump is going to St. Clair County on Sunday, Oct. 25, to campaign for Rogers and the Republicans.
The election is Nov. 3. WXYZ-TV says tonight's debate will be moderated by editorial director Chuck Stokes, joined by 7 News Detroit anchors Carolyn Clifford and Alicia Smith.
