Simon Edvinsson's patience with the Detroit Red Wings seems to be running out.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported late in the evening on Saturday, Oct. 3 that Edvinsson apparently has followed in the footsteps of Dylan Larkin and wants a trade.
Edvinsson's agent, J.P. Barry, declined to comment when reached by the Free Press. Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff met with select Detroit reporters Friday, hours before the season opener, and reiterated that signing the restricted free agent is a priority.
“We're doing everything we can, working closely with the agents," Horcoff said. "He's a big part of the club and we'd like to get him signed, but the details of the negotiation we'll keep private out of respect for Simon and his group,
and we can comment on all that when it's all said and done."
Edvinsson, 23, is an important player for the Wings, an anchor in their top four defense corps. The 6-foot-6, 200-plus pound blueliner, drafted at No. 6 overall in 2021, had 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) during his second full NHL season in 2025-26.
He went to the trouble of arranging for insurance so that he could join the Wings during training camp, and while he didn't participate in scrimmages or preseason games, he practiced and skated daily. But when the exhibition season ended and he was still without a contract, Edvinsson returned to his native Sweden. Given the travel distance and the six-hour time change, that showed the sides aren't close.
"I didn't expect that," Horcoff said on Friday regarding Edvinsson's departure. "We were excited when he came over," Horcoff said. "It was encouraging. I would say that's not that common, so we were excited when he came here. Of course it's disappointing when he went back, but, he's a priority for us."
The Wings lost their season opener, 2-0, to the New York Rangers, in a game marked by fans chanting "sell the team," directing their ire at owner Chris Ilitch after a summer that began with the bombshell that Larkin wanted out after 11 years, and then continued with the team parting ways with Steve Yzerman as general manager in mid-July, and the failure to sign Edvinsson before camp.
The Wings next play Sunday (1 p.m., DSN) against the Winnipeg Jets.
