More than three decades after bursting onto the alt-rock scene, Sponge is serving up a swan song: The Detroit band will issue its 13th and final album with the Oct. 2 release of “Recuerda Tu Muerte.”
That doesn’t necessarily spell the imminent end of Sponge as a working unit, said group founder and vocalist Vinnie Dombroski. The band will continue to perform live and the front man doesn’t rule out future recording activity — “perhaps a song or a collaboration.”
But “it’s not an album world anymore,” Dombroski told the Free Press, acknowledging the realities of the streaming era. “So from a writing point of view, I think I’ve said about all I want to say in that particular (format).”
Dombroski is the lone original member of the Sponge lineup that
broke out of Detroit in the mid-‘90s with the debut album “Rotting Pinata” and hits such as “Plowed,” “Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)” and “Have You Seen Mary,” giving the city a much-needed lifeline back to the national rock scene. The band has continued to record and tour regularly with a revolving cast of musicians.
The 10-track “Recuerda Tu Muerte” — Spanish for “Remember Your Death” — was announced Wednesday (Sept. 16) with the release of the trippy lead single “Self Inflicted Loss.” An accompanying stop-animation video produced by L.A.’s Stoopid Buddy Stoodios (“Robot Chicken”) features a candy corn factory in a callback to the cover art of “Rotting Pinata.”
The forthcoming album, whose cover features a Halloween-ready art piece created by Jon Dunivant of the Detroit institution Theatre Bizarre, is available for preorder.
A project last year with the Stoopid Buddy team unwittingly led to the new Sponge record, as Dombroski found himself with a batch of song demos and realized he had an album’s worth of material on hand.
But that’s also when he decided this was it. Focusing on the making of a full-length studio album had become “like pulling teeth,” Dombroski said.
“There’s something extremely sad, but something beautiful too about things with a finality like that,” he said. “I just go with the music. I like that it opens up other things I might want to do, writing-wise, which is nice.”
Dombroski and his current Sponge crew (guitarists Andy Patalan and Kyle Neely, bassist Tim Patalan and drummer Dave Coughlin) are rehearsing this week for a five-week tour with fellow ‘90s hitmaker Candlebox, set to kick off Sept. 22 in Colorado. (Ironically, the tour’s Detroit stop, Oct. 18 at the Fillmore, will not feature Sponge; Dombroski’s son is getting married that weekend. Michigan band Verve Pipe will fill in.)
Dombroski said 2026 has been full of final chapters in his personal life, including the loss of close Detroit music friends Matt Lee, Brian Pastoria and his Crud bandmate David Black. And the end of Sponge’s album career, which he said is captured in the very vibe of “Recuerda Tu Muerte,” has him reflecting.
“Man, making those records and the guys in the band and the circumstances — it’s all been a blast,” he said. “But this one, to me, with the feel of the record, the content of the record, is the sound of a door closing.”
