A Royal Oak man is missing on Isle Royale.
Craig Berg, 70, arrived at the remote national park on Aug. 27 to do a solo hike and was set to return home on Sept. 5. He never arrived.
"He went on an extended hike there and did not show up when he was supposed to, to catch the ferry back," Debbie Berg, Craig's wife, said on Tuesday, Sept. 8. "He is very far up, almost to Canada and closer to Minnesota than he is to Michigan."
Isle Royale National Park is one of the least visited national parks due to its remote location in the middle of Lake Superior.
Debbie Berg said there are only two rangers stationed at the 45-mile-long, 9-mile-wide island, which has no stores or restaurants, only one lodge, and extremely rugged terrain. The park has no cell service,
drones, horses, bikes, ATVs or other motorized vehicles.
"The national parks don't have so many people working there anymore," Debbie Berg noted. "There are two rangers on foot searching for a lost man on a 45-mile-long island."
Isle Royale National Park Media Liaison Liz Valencia did not immediately return a call for comment. Craig Berg is 6 feet tall and weighs 230 pounds.
