WILLOWS, California – Old horses can learn new tricks, and the 2026 Mustang RTR performance car has a stable full.
New for 2026, the Mustang RTR combines a proven and sporty drivetrain, suspension and tuning mods from six-figure super cars and racers with software, styling.
It gains 21st Century relevance from drift- and off-road racing star Vaughn Gittin Jr., who made his bones making a niche motorsport mainstream cool with a couple of generations that don’t relate to old-timey Mustang special editions like Bullitt (from a 1968 movie), Boss (B. 1969) and Shelby (1965).
The Mustang RTR is an affordable ticket to car culture and today’s coolest motor sports, the soft-spoken Gittin told me over dinner on a patio in Yountville, California.

How much?
Prices for the 2026 Mustang RTR start around $43,000, nearly $4K below the ’26 Mustang GT, and anyway, the vice principal of your middle school drove one of those.
The Mustang RTR has goodies including Brembo brakes, suspension from the six-figure Mustang Dark Horse SC, and turbocharging derived from Mustangs that compete in leading international races, like the 24 hours of Daytona and Le Mans.
Don’t confuse it with RTR cars of SUVs modified by Gittin’s own company, RTR Vehicles. I’ll explain later.
The Mustang RTR starts life as a $36,345 EcoBoost Premium model on the assembly line in flat Rock, Michigan, with a 315-horsepower turbocharged 2.3L engine and 10-speed automatic transmission.
The RTR package is a $6,520 option package.
You can add other goodies to an RTR. The Molten Magenta Metallic Tint (red) one I drove from the Wine Country’s morning mist, through farmland and mountains to a hot, sunny afternoon at Thunderhill Raceway in the Sacramento Valley added Recaro seats, B&O audio, MagneRide adaptive shocks and other sundries to total $53,105. All prices exclude $1,995 destination charge.
For the moment, the easiest way to tell a factory-built Mustang RTR with one customized by Gittin’s RTR company is that the ones his shops modify cost thousands more and add “Spec 2,” “Spec 3” and “Spec 5” to their name.
Ford and Gittin both know a thing or two about branding. I think we can count on them to find better ways to make the differences clear as their partnership matures.
Driving impressions
The RTR has one of the best balances of handling and comfort I’ve experienced in a Mustang.
The car’s weight distribution is 51% front/49% rear, creating balanced, responsive handling in quick maneuvers. Ford engineers say the Dark Horse SC’s weight distribution is around 60/40.

The 2.3L four-cylinder makes the RTR’s nose a couple of hundred pounds lighter than a Dark Horse SC with its 5.2L supercharged V-8. Retaining the big, DHSC-spec stabilizer bars and other suspension components improves handling and stability in enthusiastic maneuvers. The Dark Horse SC-derived steering also benefits from the RTR’s lighter nose, delivering quick and precise response. The RTR’s handling was consistent and predictable drifting on closed tracks.
Acceleration is excellent, while the Brembo brakes deliver confident stops and resistance to overheating and fade.
My car’s Recaro sport seats were supportive and comfortable.
The instruments and controls are clear and easy to use, including specific settings for stability control and exhaust note for track days.

Why buy a 2026 Ford Mustang RTR?
The Mustang RTR is a thorough update of Ford’s classic pony car for the enthusiastic driver whose grandparents hadn’t met when the original Mustang debuted in 1964. It delivers outstanding handling and performance for thousands of dollars less than a comparably equipped V-8-powered Mustang GT. Not to mention better fuel economy.
It’s armed with the latest mechanical and electronic goodies for affordable enthusiastic driving, on public streets or the track.
Recognizable RTR touches like lighted grille air intakes and brake calipers, decals and seat belts in the company’s signature Hyper Lime color add to its unique contemporary appeal.
