Detroit TV journalist Taryn Asher is now able to search for her next gig in television or elsewhere after an agreement was reached involving a non-compete claim with Fox 2 Detroit.
The former Fox 2 Detroit evening anchor's lawsuit against the television station continues.
"Ms. Asher's gender discrimination and retaliation claims against Fox and WJBK remain pending in federal court," said attorney Tad T. Roumayah in a statement sent to the Detroit Free Press. Asher is represented by attorneys Matt Turner and Roumayah of Sommers Schwartz.
Roumayah noted that the non-compete claim is one part of Asher's lawsuit. The non-compete claim, he said, has now been resolved and the parties have agreed to dismiss it.
"The terms of that resolution are confidential,"
Roumayah said in an emailed statement to the Detroit Free Press.
The employment dispute has been ongoing, with details of Asher's split from Fox 2 emerging in April, when Asher's attorney told the Free Press that the well-known anchor had been taken off the air due to gender discrimination.
Asher's lawsuit against the television station elicited claims by her former employer in August that she engaged in "unprofessional behavior," including the use of profanity and "outbursts in the newsroom."
According to her attorney, Asher is "actively pursuing opportunities in the industry and she hopes to stay in Detroit, a community she has cherished and where she has developed meaningful connections with viewers and fans over the years. She is deeply grateful for the support she has received from viewers throughout Metro Detroit."
Asher, who has spent the last 30 years in the television news business, joined the popular TV station in 2007. In 2022, she and Roop Raj took over as Fox 2 Detroit’s lead anchors from longtime anchors Huel Perkins and Monica Gayle, who both retired that year. She has won 10 local Emmys for her work.
Asher's agent, Mort Meisner, said Wednesday, Sept. 16, that talks are ongoing.
"We have talked with all of the major TV and radio outlets in Detroit," Meisner said.
"They are curious as to what Taryn wants to do," Meisner said.
He indicated that Asher is thankful to be able to review her options, and she will listen with interest to potential offers as they come forward.
