Story Fest, a night of storytelling on stage by journalists and artists, returns to Detroit for a third year this fall.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, Story Fest will once again take place at the Detroit Opera, where it drew a sold-out crowd in 2025. Journalists from Detroit Free Press, Michigan Public, Outlier Media, WDET-FM (101.9), BridgeDetroit, Bridge Michigan will take the stage, alongside local artists and storytellers.
Producers of the show, Back Pocket Media say this year’s theme is "Villains," and will feature stories about "what we fear, what we misunderstand, and what we become."

The Free Press is appearing
for the third year in a row. In 2024, Free Press staff writer Georgea Kovanis told the story of Amanda, who is dedicated to getting harm reduction supplies like Narcan and clean needles to drug houses and other places where nonprofits that distribute such supplies aren't usually welcome, all while she struggles with her own drug addiction.
In 2025, Free Press auto writer Jackie Charniga told the story of her great aunt whose hospice care was entirely covered by now long-gone UAW union benefits that her husband left behind after he died.
