The Week 1 slate had a little bit of everything in the Big Ten: an upset, two shutouts, upset watches — a lot of controversy — and enough suspense and excitement to test fans' heart rates over the holiday weekend.
No game embodied that more than Michigan's narrow escape against Western Michigan in Ann Arbor. After Bryce Underwood's initial Hail Mary attempt fell incomplete as time expired, officials reviewed the play and restored one second to the clock, giving the Wolverines one final snap. Underwood then cashed in on that opportunity, connecting with JJ Buchanan for a game-winning 47-yard Hail Mary touchdown.
The 13-12 win for Kyle Whittingham's Wolverines sets up a ranked matchup in Ann Arbor in Week 2 for the Wolverines against Oklahoma.

Elsewhere, No. 2 Oregon once again avoided a potential Week 1 upset to Boise State, as the Ducks outscored the Broncos 20-10 in the second half behind a pair of touchdown passes from Dante Moore. Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith got their Heisman Trophy campaigns off to a big start in top-ranked Ohio State's win over Ball State, as Sayin finished with 320 yards and three touchdown passes while Smith had 150 receiving yards and two touchdown catches.
Josh Hoover shined in his debut at defending champion Indiana, with the TCU transfer committing just three incompletions in the Hoosiers' 52-16 win over North Texas. It was the ninth game of his career in which he threw for at least four touchdowns.
Elsewhere, UCLA and Penn State won their first games in the Bob Chesney and Matt Campbell eras, respectively, while No. 14 Southern California shut out Fresno State. The lone upset in the Big Ten in Week 1 came on the East Coast, as Rutgers fell to UMass at home.
