Michigan communities faced severe thunderstorms Thursday, Sept. 3, with some areas of hard-hit southeast Michigan getting more than 2 inches of rainfall, and more was already falling Friday, Sept. 4.
Power lines and trees were downed, with homes, businesses and historic buildings damaged across metro Detroit. Stranded vehicles and flooding were also reported in the region.
On Detroit's east side, the National Weather Service office in White Lake is investigating a potential tornado following severe damage to the area. The NWS said it plans to conduct a survey to determine whether the damage was caused by a tornado or strong straight-line winds.
The storms left over 250,000 DTE Energy and Consumers Energy customers without power across the state,
as of Friday morning, Sept. 4.
Several counties in northwest Michigan were under flood advisories because of heavy rain on Thursday. The Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network website did not include rainfall totals for those areas.

- Birmingham: 2.59 inches
- Milford: 2.48 inches
- Northville: 2.35 inches
- Jackson: 2.20 inches

Here are rainfall reports for mid-Michigan as of Sept. 4, according to the Detroit/Pontiac and Grand Rapids NWS offices:
- Mount Pleasant: 1.82 inches
- Durand: 1.68 inches
- Shepherd: 1.67 inches
Rainfall totals reported on Sept. 3:
- Fowlerville: 0.84 inches
- Haslett: 0.72 inches
- Williamston: 0.67 inches
How much did it rain in west Michigan?
Here are rainfall reports for west Michigan as of Sept. 4, according to the Grand Rapids NWS office:
- Bellevue: 1.24 inches
- Sparta: 0.78 inches
- Saranac: 0.77 inches
How much did it rain in the Upper Peninsula?
Here are rainfall reports for the Upper Peninsula as of Sept. 4, according to the Marquette NWS office:
- Ironwood: 1.17 inches
- Marquette: 1.12 inches
- Traunik: 0.88 inches
