From Marquette to Ironwood and the Keweenaw Peninsula, communities throughout Michigan's U.P. are celebrating Plaidurday on Friday, Oct. 2, and you can join the fun by donning your favorite plaid attire.

Plaidurday is celebrated on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026.
The informal holiday falls on the first Friday in October each year.
How did Plaidurday come about?
Plaidurday, a day celebrating all things plaid, started in mid-Michigan's Lansing, inspired by locals' reaction to their U.P. native co-worker, Bugsy Sailor, who frequently sported plaid attire, per Plaidurday's website. Sailor came up with the idea for National Plaid Day, better known as Plaidurday, on Aug. 26, 2010, and the first celebration was held on Oct. 7, 2011, per the website.
Where can you celebrate Plaidurday in the U.P.?
Here are Oct. 2 Plaidurday festivities across the U.P.:
- Plaidurday-themed festivities at Canal Colors Festival in the Keweenaw Peninsula: The festival will feature a Keweenaw Plaidurday photo at Houghton High School's football field from 1-2 p.m., with free apple cider and donuts and a canned food drive, among the day's activities. A second photo opportunity will occur at 7 p.m. during the festival's Brew Street.
- 10th annual Plaidurday celebration in downtown Ironwood: Activities throughout the day include live music; a Stormy Kromer scavenger hunt; food trucks; a group photo; free wine, tea and treats; a farmers market; and a Stormy Kromer cap tattoos deal.
- Plaidurday in Marquette: Hosted at Marquette's Presque Isle Bandshell at 5:30 p.m., the event will feature a group photo of attendees wearing plaid, followed by mingling and a scenic sunset view.
