SEATTLE – The Detroit Red Wings sputtered for 40 minutes before delivering a spirited response.
The third period was highlighted by Lucas Raymond's first goal of the season and Alex DeBrincat's 300th career goal as the Wings battled back from a three-goal deficit against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The Wings ended up falling, 4-3, in a shootout, but it was the fifth straight game they collected at least a point, bumping their record to 3-3-3.
Goaltender Daniil Tarasov was fine; it was his teammates who managed only four shots on net in the second period, which they entered down by a goal and exited down by three. Viktor Arvidsson edged Detroit within two when Emmitt Finnie raced up ice, drawing defenders to him
and leaving Arvidsson room to score his fourth goal of the season, first at regular strength.
Raymond narrowed the gap to one goal when he scored during a power play, battling by the net to stuff the puck into Seattle's net. Raymond scored in a shootout three nights earlier, but that does not count as an individual statistic.
Tarasov was pulled with just over two minutes to go in regulation for the extra attacker and the Wings gained another skater advantage when Seattle took a penalty with 1:25 to go, and DeBrincat knocked the puck in from the left side of the net to make it 3-3 with 16.9 seconds to go. DeBrincat also had an assist, and Dylan Larkin assisted on two goals.
Who played
J.T. Compher, Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton were sidelined by injury, and Nate Danielson was scratched as the Wings stayed with an 11 and 7 formation. The top line had Finnie with Alex DeBrincat and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, and Dylan Larkin was with Arvidsson and Lucas Raymond. Andrew Copp centered MIchael Rasmussen and Carter Mazur, and Sheldon Dries and Keegan Kolesar also played.
On defense, Moritz Seider, Ben Chiarot, Albert Johansson, Justin Faulk, Anton Johansson, Andreas Englund and Axel Sandin-Pellikka all dressed.
First strike

For the sixth time in nine games, the Wings gave up the first goal. Mackie Samoskevich pulled the Kraken ahead at 6:45 of the first period when he picked up a drop pass from Chandler Stephenson and beat Tarasov. The Wings went on a power play shortly afterwards but weren't able to generate much against Philipp Grubauer.
Power strike
The Wings had a tough start to the second period. First they took a too-many-men penalty, at 34 seconds. At 1:37, Sandin-Pellikka got nabbed for a delay of game penalty, setting up a 58-second two-man advantage for the Kraken. The Wings killed that off, but there was still five seconds on the clock to Sandin-Pellikka when the Kraken converted. Rasmussen lost the puck in a corner and with three Wings players swarming that area, Ryker Evas had time and space in the slot to make it 2-0, at 3:22.
Strike three
The deficit grew late in the second period. Berkly Catton won a draw against Andrew Copp and the puck squirted back to Brandon Montour, who made quick work in turning into a 3-0 lead, at 16:01. Larkin had a solid chance shortly afterwards but his shot was blocked by Matty Beniers.

The West Coast trip continues with another late-night game, this time against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday (10 p.m., DSN).
