The PWHL Detroit coaching roster continues to grow, as the Professional Women's Hockey League team added both Hockey Hall of Famer Danielle Goyette and former Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard ahead of the team's inaugural season.
Howard spent 14 years in playing for Detroit (2005-2020), capturing three All-Star appearances for the Red Wings and notching 246 wins and 24 shutouts in goal.
“It’s such an incredible honor to be the goaltending coach for PWHL Detroit,” Howard said in a statement Tuesday Sept. 29. “I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such an amazing group of athletes and staff. I’m proud to be part of this team and this city!”
This is Howard's first professional coaching role since retiring in 2021.
Prior to joining
the PWHL Detroit staff, led by head coach Josh Sciba, Howard coached with the Little Caesars AAA Hockey Club.
Goyette, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2017, has won two Olympic gold medals with Team Canada. She will join Detroit as an assistant coach.
Goyette served as the director of player development for the Toronto Maple Leafs last year, her lone season there.
“It’s a great opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to joining PWHL Detroit and working with such a great group of people, staff, and coaches, led by Manon Rhéaume,” Goyette said in a statement. “It’s a new team and the first-ever professional women’s hockey team in Detroit, with a great mix of experienced and younger players. We have an exciting opportunity to build something special and create a team environment that will be fun and exciting to be part of, especially in a hockey city like Detroit.”
