There's nowhere to hide for the man suspected of shooting and wounding a mother and her 7-year-old daughter over a fight about their young children on Oct. 12, said community activist Teferi Brent.
“There is no cover for this gentleman. No cover at all," he said at the scene Monday night near Van Dyke and Farnsworth, off Gratiot Avenue on Detroit's east side.
"If he’s emotionally immature enough to do that, we don’t know what else he’s capable of doing ... Anyone who knows him, tell on him. Hold him accountable. It’s not snitching because you weren’t a part of the crime.”
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, who was also on scene, said that "the whole altercation started with a fight between their children earlier that day − I’m talking about seven,
eight-year-olds."
Then around 7 p.m., the father of one of the children came to the apartment and confronted the mother of a 7-year-old girl. Bettison said at one point during the argument, she shut the door, but he forced his way in, pulled out a gun, and fired a single shot that went through the mother's arm and struck her young daughter's shoulder.
The mother and daughter are in stable condition, "thank God," said Bettison. As for the suspect, he fled. Bettison, when addressing the media on scene, said the shooter should turn himself in, considering he's known to the area.
“It doesn’t even make sense. I’m just really disgusted by it," Bettison said.
"For somebody to travel, knock on a door, confront a mom, pull out a gun, fire a shot, now shooting the mother, the same bullet shoots child ... it's senseless."
