SONOMA, California – Ford Racing reached deep into its toolkit to create the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC, a 795-horsepower coupe that combines features from the hand-built $300K+ Mustang GTD with production at Ford’s Flat Rock assembly plant, home to the Mustang’s $31K base model.
Ford recently tapped its racing group — which actually pre-dates the automaker itself: Henry Ford went racing before the current FoMoCo existed as a corporate entity — to add brio to a lineup management deemed snooze-inducing.
Let’s not dwell on who greenlit those me-too mobiles. A corner office means never having to say you’re sorry.
Regardless, the Mustang Dark Horse SC (SC stands for "supercharged") is a bold six-figure start. In dealerships now and accompanied by race-proven
features, accent colored seat belts and a six-figure price, the DHSC is not to be ignored.
I recently spent a day driving a pair of Dark Horse SCs from the lush wine country around Yountville, California, to the parched hills above Sonoma Raceway.

How much?
Prices for the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC start at $103,490. That price, and all others in this review, includes a $2,600 gas guzzler tax but excludes a $1,995 destination fee.
I drove two DHSCs. One, lavishly equipped, stickered at $156,355 and came with $52,000 worth of options, including a carbon fiber and track packages and teal-accent seat belts, all of which I enjoyed.
The second was as close to a base model as the DHSC gets. It cost $107,725. Its tab for options was a mere $4,235, barely worth mentioning in the present company. Most of that was the $2,600 gas-guzzler tax; $495 went to Prime Blue seat belts, which are also pretty snazzy.
This is the point where I usually compare cost and value to the competition, but the DHSC really has none. If you want to pay this much for a Mustang, there’s no substitute, and if you don’t want a Mustang, the Porsche 911 and Chevy Corvette offer fine alternatives.
The DHSC keeps every promise its spec sheet makes.
If you’re not in the market for an apex predator Mustang, you got off elevator at the wrong floor.
What makes the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC special?
The DHSC comes with a supercharged 5.2L version of Ford’s beloved Coyote V-8. It produces 795 hp and 660 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed Tremec dual-clutch automatic transmission, Torsen rear differential and carbon fiber drive shaft are also standard.
Ford also upgraded the rear half shafts to handle the engine’s prodigious torque — and the hard running most DHSCs will probably see on track days.
MagneRide adaptive shocks and magnesium strut towers are standard. Engineers also reworked the stabilizer bars, springs, control arms, steering gear and rack.
The team tested the SC alongside the Mustang GT4 race car at tracks including Sebring (in Florida) and Virginia International, Chief Engineer Arie Groeneveld said.
Pirelli P Zero tires, aluminum wheels and Brembo brakes are standard.
The track and carbon fiber packages add carbon-ceramic brakes — still Brembo, of course — carbon fiber wheels and Michelin Sport Cup tires.
The track pack replaces the rear seat with a parcel shelf, reducing weight and saves your friends the embarrassment of entering and exiting the back seat of a Mustang. They’ll thank you.
Aerodynamic goodies include a carbon fiber rear wing and complementary ducktail on the trunk that generate 620 pounds of downforce at 180 mph.
I didn’t experience that. My doctor advised me a while ago I’d reached my lifetime allowance of concussions — none of which occurred when I was at the wheel.
When you pay smart people for advice, take it.
Driving impressions
The Dark Horse SC’s steering is responsive and neutral, well-suited highway, country roads and track. The adaptive suspension keeps the car stable and planted in enthusiastic driving and absorbs the impact of rough surfaces.
The transmission is quick and smooth.
The interior is surprisingly quiet, thanks to noise cancellation and additional structural adhesives.
The Dark Horse SC has sport seats, aluminum pedals and 12-speaker B&O audio. A single-pane display rising above the steering column and center stack includes a 12.4-inch instrument cluster and 13.2-inch touch screen. Electronic extras include selectable levels of traction control, launch control and displays of performance data.
The adjustable exhaust note ranges from quiet enough not to wake the neighbors to a track setting that announces an oncoming DHSC before it comes into sight on a road course.
Why buy a 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC?
The supercharged Dark Horse is an exceptionally well-rounded sports car. Easy to drive and reasonably comfortable on the street, it also has the hardware and software to compete on track with the other global legends of performance and style.
