It's been about week that downtown doors have been locked at 7greens Detroit Salad Co., a popular lunchtime spot for salads, bowls, soups and other fare. There's no sign of activity inside and no sign on the door saying it's closed. 7greens is typically open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
On Library Street, a few steps from Mootz Pizzeria + Bar, a restaurant staffer who answered the phone on Tuesday, Sept. 1, said the restaurant was closing down after business Tuesday, but the Free Press couldn't confirm that. Since then, there's been no known activity, the phone number is not working and online ordering is unavailable.
7greens is known for its health-forward fare, with a wide array of salad options, bowl options and wrap sandwiches.
“At 7greens, it’s more than just a salad. It’s a way to a healthy, balanced eating lifestyle – and to enjoy every bite,” according to its website.
Kelly Schaefer is the founder of 7greens and opened the Detroit location in 2014. It was Schaefer’s first foray owning a restaurant, according to its website.
Schaefer, a graduate of French Culinary Institute in New York, founded 7greens to offer wholesome and healthy options, providing a scratch-made flexitarian menu that includes vegan and paleo options.
Schaefer has not responded to messages from the Free Press requesting information.
In the area around 7greens, the fast-casual options touting health-forward-fare competition heated up within the last year.
National salad-forward chain Sweetgreen opened on Woodward Avenue, about two blocks from 7greens. It was about a year ago that Cava, a national chain known for its bowl options and Mediterranean fare opened on Woodward Avenue, steps from Campus Martius. Toastique, a fast-casual restaurant which also offers smoothies and a coffee bar, opened in October 2025 at 89 Monroe St., also near Campus Martius.
According to its online menu, 7greens uses hormone and antibiotic free chicken, organic, cage-free eggs and natural sweeteners. Its soups and bread are homemade, and the restaurant offered many gluten-free options.
7greens has a location at Detroit Metropolitan Airport’s McNamara Terminal, which opened about a year ago in a shared space with Wahlburgers.
