A father and son were rescued Saturday morning, Sept. 26, after becoming stranded in Lake St. Clair, approximately 3 miles offshore from the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, officials say.
The two boaters, who were suffering hypothermia when rescued, according to the Michigan Department of Natural of Resources, were setting a buoy course for a sailboat race when a line tangled around their propeller on Saturday, Sept. 26.
The father got into the water to untangle the line, but was unable to get back into the boat. Shortly after, at approximately 8:29 a.m., the son called 911 for help and fell into the water.
The lake's water temperature Saturday morning was in the low 60s. Air temperatures were in the 50s at the time of the rescue.
DNR dispatchers helped
pinpoint the exact location of the boaters and, an hour later, rescuers pulled the father from the water and immediately provided care for signs of hypothermia. A Coast Guard vessel arrived at the same time, and the crew was able to rescue the son.
Both men were transported to a hospital by ambulance.
“Our thoughts are with them, and we all are hoping the best for their recovery. We urge all boaters to keep in mind that water temperatures are becoming dangerously cold and to take proper safety precautions when boating during the fall,” said Chief Brandon Kieft, DNR Law Enforcement Division.
The DNR on Tuesday did not immediately respond to questions for a status update of the boaters.
