A Dearborn police officer and an auto crime suspect were injured in an officer-involved shooting near the 100 block of Southfield Road in Ecorse early Wednesday morning, Aug. 5, according to police.
At approximately 5:45 a.m., Dearborn officers assigned to the Southeast Michigan Auto Crimes Consortium — a regional task force made up of federal, state, county and local officers — attempted to take occupants of a vehicle into custody for their alleged involvement in several dozen metro Detroit car break-ins, according to a news release from the Dearborn Police Department.
During the arrest attempt, the driver of the vehicle accelerated and struck an officer. At that time, another officer discharged his weapon and struck the driver, according to
the news release.
The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle and was taken into custody following the pursuit. He sustained a non-life-threatening injury and was transported to a local hospital, according to police. The officer hit by the vehicle was also transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries.
Michigan State Police is investigating the shooting. There is no ongoing threat to the public, according to the news release.
Dearborn Police Department did not immediately respond to further Free Press questions.
The incident is the second non-fatal Dearborn officer-involved shooting in two weeks. On Friday, July 24, police responded to a report of a man yelling "die, die, die" at approximately 11 p.m., according to an Instagram post by the Dearborn Police Department.
When police arrived at the 24000 block of New York Street, they observed a man exit a home with a long gun, according to the post. An officer discharged his weapon, striking and injuring the 53-year-old.
No other individuals or officers were injured as a result of the incident, according to police. Michigan State Police was notified of the shooting and is investigating as of Saturday, July 25.
