A 32-year-old man who drove over the Ambassador Bridge without stopping at border inspection lanes has been arrested for dangerous driving, according to Windsor Police. Two Canadian officers were injured during his arrest.
Windsor Police were dispatched to the international bridge connecting Detroit to Windsor at approximately 2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, to assist the Canada Border Services Agency after a driver did not stop at the border inspection lanes, according to a news release posted by Windsor Police on X on Saturday, Aug. 29 morning.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers began speaking with the driver in question. When asked to step out of the vehicle, the man refused and "began driving the car at a high rate of speed, injuring one Windsor
Police officer and one CBSA officer," according to the news release. The officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The vehicle hit several barriers and flipped over, the man fled on foot, and officers arrested him a short time later without further incident, according to the news release. One suspect was in custody related to an active investigation at the bridge as of a post by Windsor Police at 3:45 p.m. Friday, which told drivers to expect delays and possible traffic disruptions as the investigation continues.
The man is being charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon, according to Windsor Police.
