The candidates vying to lead Michigan as the state's next governor will make appearances at a Detroit Economic Club gathering at the MotorCity Casino Hotel at noon on Wednesday, Sept. 16, as the race heats up.
Democratic nominee Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Republican nominee U.S. Rep. John James of Shelby Township are set to make separate appearances to the crowd and answer questions from WDIV-TV anchor and reporter Jason Colthorp. James will join remotely from Washington, D.C. after the Detroit Economic Club was informed about a schedule change for congressional votes, according to club spokesperson Matt Friedman. Benson will appear in-person.
The Detroit Economic Club routinely holds forums for candidates for major offices
to address its members.
On issues ranging from education to the state's economy, James has argued that Michigan is due for a pivot away from Democratic leadership after eight years under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who cannot run again due to term limits. Benson, meanwhile, has tied James to President Donald Trump's agenda, arguing that his policies have saddled Michiganders with high costs as she promises to tackle cost-of-living challenges.
The election takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
