A spiritual group wants southeast Michigan to give peace a chance.
On Tuesday, July 28, the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run, which aims to promote international friendship, traveled through southeast Michigan on its national tour. The team ran 55 miles, from Chelsea to Detroit, passing the Peace Torch along the way before finishing by the Renaissance Center.
The Peace Run team is on a 5-month journey through all 50 states to honor the U.S.'s 250th birthday, spreading the message that peace comes from within the individual. On their route, they meet with groups and youth organizations to talk about peace with locals.
The Peace Run was founded by Sri Chinmoy in 1987. Chinmoy was an Indian spiritual leader and activist who taught meditation in the
U.S. The international team of runners relays a peace torch during their run as a symbol of friendship between people of all countries.
The group has chapters in over 160 countries and territories.
One of the runners is Devendra Cheatham, a 53-year-old man from Texas who's made the peace run in several countries between North America and Africa.
Cheatham's been involved with the organization for 23 years. He said its message of individual peace and appreciation resonates with him the most."Every single person has something unique and precious to offer the world," he said. "The world is really not complete without those offerings."
