SEATTLE – One of the Detroit Tigers’ most promising young arms is set to return to the starting rotation this weekend in San Francisco, after nearly a 14-month absence. That Jackson Jobe is back – along with, presumably, his 100-mph fastball – is reason for optimism among the Tigers faithful.
But for manager A.J. Hinch, it’s reason to think he might settle into something of a consistent starting rotation the next few weeks after a tumultuous few months of injuries and trades. Not that the current starting five won’t change again before the season is finished.
It almost certainly will, when right-hander Jack Flaherty returns from the 15-day IL – Hinch expects him to miss more than 15 days, and he is only playing catch at the moment – and if righty
Justin Verlander ever finds his way back.
Until then, though, Hinch can roll out Troy Melton, Keider Montero, Framber Valdez, Jobe, and Drew Anderson, who started Wednesday, Aug. 5, and was one out shy of throwing four scoreless innings.
Hinch would like to build Anderson’s pinch count from the mid-40s – he threw 42 pitches against the Mariners, 28 of them for strikes – to the 60s, 70s or even 80s if he can remain effective that long. That’ll be up to Anderson’s performance.
If he can, that gives the Tigers a potentially solid rotation even after the trades of Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize before the MLB trade deadline, assuming Jobe can build on the promise he showed before he had Tommy John surgery in spring 2025.
“Will be nice to get him back,” Hinch said. “Controlling his emotions will be No. 1 and the excitement that comes with it. He's a good pitcher. He's worked really hard to make this recovery possible as fast as possible, and also as safely as possible. He was never lost – or forgotten. [It was] just a matter of time until we were going to be able to reinsert him.”
As Hinch noted, the 2021 first-round pick comes with a lot of expectations.
“He comes with a lot of pride, too, because recovery off of that surgery, while a little more mainstream nowadays than maybe a decade ago – is also a grueling process,” Hinch said.
Jobe started 10 games before the surgery last year. He was just starting to find his way.
“He's got a lot to learn,” said Hinch. “The development time that was lost while he was rehabbing, it’s tough competitively. But he did do some things I think sharpened his delivery and his stuff and his understanding of pitching. I think he learned a lot about himself. He got to study a lot of different things. I’ve been most impressed by his strikes in his rehab outings and his understanding of trying to get leverage.”
Now he’ll have to do it at the big-league level. If he can, the Tigers may just have something with their rotation for the next few weeks.
Brant Hurter injury update
Brant Hurter threw his first rehab outing Wednesday with Low-A Lakeland and didn’t finish his inning. He gave up one hit, three runs and a walk as he tried to work his way back from lumbar spine inflammation.
The lefty reliever was placed on the 15-day IL on May 23 and put on the 60-day IL May 29. He has been missed in the Tigers bullpen.
Hinch wasn’t worried too much about the outing. He was grateful Hurter got through it without any health flareups.
Yes, Hinch admitted, not finishing the innings was “frustrating for him and for us, but the best news was that there were no physical issues, which is kind of what rehab is all about. We'd love it to be perfect and clean and have no trouble with great command and all that, and that will come.”
But?
“The news has been great because he is responding,” Hinch said.
Hurter had a 2.84 ERA in 21 appearances before going on the IL.
