A pair of Detroit-themed animatronic characters are out to raise the woof this weekend at Riot Fest 2026.
The Insane Clown Puppies, created with the blessing of horrorcore rap duo Insane Clown Posse, are stationed in a gaming tent at the Chicago rock event, one of the country’s biggest annual alternative-music festivals.
Violent Stray and Scooby 2 Dope, as they’ve been dubbed, perform ICP standards (“Hocus Pocus,” “What is a Juggalo”) and come armed with bottles of Spaygo — a play on the real group’s embrace of Detroit-made Faygo pop.
The concept was the brainchild of the team at Logan Arcade, a Chicago pinball and video game bar that runs the annual Riot Fest tent at Douglass Park. Several years ago, the arcade scored a hit with an animatronic
Misfits band called the Biscuits, and it proposed the Insane Clown Puppies idea this spring on social media.
“The response was incredible. People were very into it,” says Logan Arcade’s Jim Zespy. “We realized there was something here.”
A chance meeting with ICP’s Violent J at a Chicago museum soon sealed the deal. The Detroit rapper had seen the social media buzz and — with his daughter at his side — gave Zespy the thumbs-up.
Unlike the Biscuits, which were built from existing Chuck E. Cheese animatronic characters, the Insane Clown Puppies were constructed from scratch. Dave Vondle, a Michigan native and ICP fan since his teens, oversaw the programming.
“It’s totally absurd and awesome,” says Zespy. “And the fact the band is into it is amazing.”
Like the real-life ICP, the Insane Clown Puppies deploy the pop bottles to spray their audiences, though they use water than the sticky Faygo you get at an ICP concert.
While their dog doppelgangers are playing all weekend inside the Logan Arcade tent, Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope will help close out Riot Fest with a Sunday night performance.
In the meantime, ICP’s fans — Juggalos, as they’re known — have been streaming to the arcade tent for a look at the Insane Clown Puppies: “They’ve been freaking out,” says Zespy.
Zespy expects the Puppies to keep rocking well beyond this weekend, and he's got fingers crossed they could even make an appearance at ICP’s annual fest.
“I don’t want to jinx anything, but if I got text saying, ‘Do you want to come to the Gathering (of the Juggalos)?’ I already know the answer. We’ll always have all the parts around," he says.
ICP and the Insane Clown Puppies are part of a busy music bill at Riot Fest, founded 21 years ago in Chicago. Headliners this year include Iggy Pop, Tool, Morrissey, Twenty One Pilots and Nas.
