A 7-year-old South Bend, Indiana, boy has died after being pulled from the water at Silver Beach County Park on Lake Michigan on Monday night, Aug. 31, according to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials say despite the efforts by medical personnel, the boy died at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Monday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the sheriff's office said in a release.
First responders were dispatched to the county park at the mouth of the St. Joseph River in St. Joseph at 8:54 p.m. Monday for a water rescue involving a boy who was missing and had last been seen in the water.
First responders, along with the U.S. Coast Guard immediately began a search for the child,
who was found at about 10:08 p.m. near shore.
First responders began first aid and the boy transported by Medic 1 Ambulance to Corewell Health Lakeland Emergency Department in St. Joseph for further treatment.
Assisting at the scene were St Joseph Department of Public Safety, Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Berrien County Public Safety Communication Center, Medic 1 Ambulance and U.S. Coast Guard.
