The Detroit Lions continue to churn the back end of the roster three days after they cut to the 53-player limit.

The Lions waived running back Jabari Small and center Seth McLaughlin on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Both Small and McLaughlin suffered injuries last week. McLaughlin was in concussion protocol and missed the Lions’ preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts

, while Small left that game with injury.

The Lions kept both players on their initial 53-man roster. Had they waived either player, the player would’ve been due an injury settlement and would not have been able to immediately re-sign to the Lions’ practice squad.

If both players clear waivers, they could

rejoin the practice squad after 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3.

Small still could contribute early in the regular season as the Lions’ No. 4 running back while Isaiah Pacheco is on IR with a back injury.

McLaughlin is the Lions’ backup center, though Tate Ratledge could be next in line while Cade Mays is on IR if something happens to Juice Scruggs in a game.
